What is cabling and how do I know if I need it?
Category 6A Data Cabling: These cables connect your router or switch to devices needing a wired connection, such as wireless access points, security cameras, and network expansions. Wired connections offer more reliable and faster performance than wireless, which is crucial for devices serving multiple users. They can also transmit power, simplifying installations without additional electrical work.

How Much Cabling Do You Need?
-
Typically, one cable run per access point, security camera, or wired Ethernet jack.

Shielded vs. Unshielded Cabling

Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP):
-
Construction: No additional shielding, just twisted pairs to reduce interference.
-
Purpose: Flexible, easy to install, and cost-effective.
-
Use Cases: Ideal for homes or small offices with minimal electromagnetic interference (EMI), short cable runs, and budget-conscious setups.

Shielded Twisted Pair (STP):
-
Construction: Additional shielding around the twisted pairs or entire cable.
-
Purpose: Protects against EMI and crosstalk.
-
Use Cases: Best for high-interference environments (e.g., data centers, industrial settings), high-speed networks, and long cable runs.

For most home or small office setups, UTP is perfectly fine!
How Many Access Points do I need?
This question Kind of depends on your space.

-
As a general rule of thumb, the model of Access point (AP) we use for most spaces covers roughly 1500 square feet in diameter of open space each from where we place them.

There are variables.

-
obstructions are going to make signal not travel well in your space. Things like walls, furniture, or any kind of solid material are going to make signal not travel as well. The more solid the material, the less strength at which signal frequency will travel which leads to lower performance.
-
outdoor access points can run a little bit more, usually around $20 more per AP in hardware cost.

For Homes

-
In the past, we have found success in going with a 2 or 3 indoor AP design in most homes under or around the 2,000 square foot range. This provides an optimal balance of signal strength and cost in most cases. But there have been special circumstances where we went with 4 if there are a significant amount of thick walls such as what you might find in a duplex and depending on how great the client wants the space to perform.

For Businesses

-
This is where it will really vary based on your space. An apartment complex isn't going to have the same needs as a doctors office or a mechanic shop. In these circumstances we will take a look at your space, and if you have maybe a larger open area we can look at going with a higher cost and beefier AP to reduce cabling runs, sometimes covering up to a 5,000 Sq ft. Open area with a single AP. We will look at your space and come up with a plan to best fill the need from a cost and performance standpoint.
